So many of us carry silence in our throats that we inherited.
From our mothers, from their mothers, from generations of women who learned it wasn't safe to speak, to sing, to take up space with their sound.
For years I've been hearing from women that they feel they inherited something through their motherline in how they're heard, seen, and how they express themselves. I hear so many women wanting to birth themselves out of this burden. But there's a second part that often gets missed: our grandmothers also carried qualities, character strengths, and wisdoms through the voice, through the womb.
Our mother's voice surrounded us in gestation, imprinting everything. Her emotions, her fears, her excitements, her love. All of it carried in the frequency of her sound during the long dream of our becoming.
What if we could start to sift through what we picked up from her?
The pieces that were part of a story we're unlearning while simultaneously drawing from the incredible reservoir of wisdom, medicine, and spiritual blessings also carried in the voice from her mother and all the mothers all the way back to the original song of the womb.
The Practice
In this vocal alchemy prayer, I'm offering a way to vocalize, visualize, and repattern the imprints of the womb and our relationship to our own voice. To call upon the wisdom of the motherline to support us in embodying our bold and beautiful becoming while alchemizing any of the imprints that withhold, stay small, or contract.
I love recoding my relationship with my voice with my voice specifically. There's nothing more powerful than allowing the voice to lead the way and be the vibrational current to awaken dormant gifts of our motherline just waiting for us to sing them into being.
